Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Plot: For Steve Rogers, awakening after decades of suspended animation involves than catching up on pop culture; it also means that this old school idealist must face a world of subtler threats and difficult moral complexities. That comes clear when Director Nick Fury is killed by the mysterious assassin, the Winter Soldier, but not before warning Rogers that SHIELD has been subverted by its enemies. When Rogers acts on Fury's warning to trust no one there, he is branded as a traitor by the organization. Now a fugitive, Captain America must get to the bottom of this deadly mystery with the help of the Black Widow and his new friend, The Falcon. However, the battle will be costly for the Sentinel of Liberty, with Rogers finding enemies where he least expects them while learning that the Winter Soldier looks disturbingly familiar. Buzz: Sneak Peek more pages from Marvel Comics' "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" graphic novel prequel, "Captain America: Homecoming", written by Fred Van Lente,  with illustrations by Tom Grummett and Mark Bagley:"...'Captain America' and the 'Black Widow' leap into action in an all-new, cinematic-set adventure... Rio 2

Rio 2

Plot: It's a jungle out there for Blu, Jewel and their three kids after they're hurtled Rio de Janeiro to the wilds of the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in, he goes beak-to-beak with the vengeful Nigel, and meets the most fearsome adversary of all: his father-in-law. Written by TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

Buzz: Suffers badly by comparison with the cogent, witty Avengers flicks. This feels like a campy Saturday-morning cartoon left over from the 1970s. I’m “biast” (pro): like the castI’m “biast” (con): wasn’t a huge fan of the first one; the trailer looked generic(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) Two years on from the first pointless reboot of the Spider-Man story — a mere five years after the previous version had wra...

Oculus

Oculus

Plot: A woman tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.

Buzz: It’s often said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, which is exactly why I left A Haunted House 2 channeling my inner Michael Bluth while muttering, “I don’t know what I expected.” There was a small, microscopic bit of hope that optimistically motivated my legs to physically walk into my screening, but within mere repetitive minutes, I realized a maddening case of déjà vu was about to hit.Wh...

Draft Day

Draft Day

Plot: At the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver has the opportunity to rebuild his team when he trades for the number one pick. He must decide what he's willing to sacrifice on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with NFL dreams.

Buzz: Transcendence should be the winner this weekend, even though it looks to be the most mysterious title on the board (generally a deal-breaker with general audiences). Here's the crazy part - right now it sits at 17 percent on RottenTomatoes! That's really shocking. I would have given it around a B- (just as Brad did), right on the border, but I can't believe it's treading in the teens while Divergent and Draft Day are 20 and 30 points higher. Still, the tracking for Transcend...

Buzz: No, it’s not wildly different than other science fiction, hero’s journey, and adventure movies. Sometimes we call such stories archetypal. Mythic, even. I’m “biast” (pro): I am eager for movies — especially genre movies — with female protagonistsI’m “biast” (con): nothingI have not read the source material(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) Now see that, Hollywood! That wasn’t so hard, was i...

God's Not Dead

God's Not Dead

Plot: College student Josh Wheaton's faith is challenged by his philosophy professor, who believes God does not exist.

Buzz: "Heaven is for Real" is a real success at the box-office. The faith-based drama starring Greg Kinnear wowed with a $3.7 million take on 2,400 screens over its opening day Wednesday, good enough for a No. 1 finish over the blockbuster sequels "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Rio 2." The film's long-term prospects are looking promising as well, with audience exit polling resulting in an "A" CinemaScore for the film, which was made for a repor...

Written by Fox Searchlight Pictures

Buzz: This weekend will not be a wash for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah.  The controversial biblical epic opened with $15.2 million from 3,500 locations yesterday, including $1.6 million from Thursday pm previews.  That puts Noah on course for close to $44 million through Sunday – well above the $33 million Paramount said it was expecting.  Anything above $43.5 million would also give Russell Crowe the best opening of his career (outside of his supporting turn in Man of Steel). ...

Written by Juan Diaz

Buzz: Wall Street analysts were taking potshots at DreamWorks Animation on Monday after Mr. Peabody & Sherman raked in a lackluster $32.5 million over the weekend, causing the stock to drop 1.4 percent while the S&P 500 was about flat. Stern Agee analyst Vasily Karasyov predicts Peabody will eventually earn $310 million at the global box office, which would translate to an $84 million write-down. Karasyov has an "underperform" rating on Dwa and $17 price target, whereas shares clos...
